The biggest difference between a lithium battery and a lithium-ion battery is that our lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable, while the regular lithium batteries are not. There is often confusion between lithium batteries and lithium ion batteries. While lithium batteries are single-use cells that cannot be recharged and must be discarded, empty lithium-ion batteries are secondary cells with a high energy density. The advantages of lithium-ion batteries are numerous. They have a high energy density that allows them to store energy in a compact space. Essentially, a lithium-ion battery consists of three parts: an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte.

During battery discharge, energy is released as lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode. During charging, this process reverses, with ions moving from the cathode to the anode.
